Staff Sgt. Errol I. Acosta, a drill instructor with Receiving Company, begins the transition from civilian to Marine at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, Calif. Nov. 3. Recruits also begin to see, even in the beginning hours of their training, that their individual characteristics are stripped away as the drill instructors shift their attitude toward teamwork rather than working as individuals. Within the first night, the recruits will have the same style haircut, wear the same type of uniform and the same style shoes. During the five-day receiving process, recruits are put into temporary platoons to take care of medical and administrative procedures. Recruits then begin their training after they are deemed physically and mentally fit to complete their 13 weeks of recruit training to earn the title Marine.

Marines from 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion 3rd Marine Division, and Combat Logistics Regiment 3, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, do a static-line jump off an KC-130 during bilateral parachute operations Feb. 29, 2008 at Clark Air Base, Republic of the Philippines, during the closing days of Exercise Balikatan 2008. Balikatan is an annual, bilateral humanitarian assistance and military training exercise between the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the U.S. military. The parachute operations are a regularly scheduled part of the exercise and gave approximately 80 Marines a chance to train side by side with more than 40 of their Philippine counterparts. "The [drop zone] is the only thing that ever really changes," said Sgt. Zachary Burgart, a reconnaissanceman with 3rd Reconnaissance Bn., who has had three previous jumps with the Philippine service members during Exercise Balikatan 2006. "But every time you jump it's a blast. It's an adrenaline rush when you first step off the plane and then it's really peaceful on the way down."
